Left Front Names 32 More for 2026 Bengal Polls: Focus on Youth and Academics

officially released its second list of candidates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, naming 32 additional nominees. This announcement follows the first list of 192 candidates, bringing the total number of declared seats to 224 as the alliance gears up for the two-phase polls scheduled for April 23 and 29.

The second list, announced at Alimuddin Street, continues the Front’s strategy of blending academic expertise with grassroots youth leadership, while also addressing high-profile battlegrounds.

Key Candidates and Noteworthy Faces
The second list is dominated by the CPI(M), which accounts for 28 of the 32 names, with the remainder distributed among allies like the CPI and RSP.
• Afrin Begum (Shilpi) – Ballygunge: One of the most significant names in this round, Afrin Begum is a researcher at Jadavpur University and was a prominent face during student protests. She has been fielded from the Ballygunge constituency, a seat historically significant for its diverse voter base in South Kolkata.
• Partha Pratim Biswas – Tollygunge: A professor from the Department of Construction Engineering at Jadavpur University, Biswas will contest from Tollygunge. This seat is a major cultural and political hub, often referred to as the “Tollywood” seat, and his nomination highlights the Left’s push to appeal to the urban intelligentsia.
• Shanti Giri – Nandigram: In a move to take on political heavyweights, the Left Front (via the CPI) has nominated Shanti Giri for the Nandigram seat. This constituency remains the most watched in the state, as Giri will be challenging the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari (BJP).
• Srijib Biswas – Bhowanipore: The Left has re-fielded lawyer Srijib Biswas for the Bhowanipore seat. This is the home turf of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, making it a high-intensity battleground where the Left aims to consolidate anti-incumbency votes.
• Dr. Pulin Behari Baskey – Nayagram: A seasoned hand, Dr. Baskey has been nominated for Nayagram, a key tribal-dominated constituency in the Jungle Mahal region.
• Pasang Sherpa – Kalchini: Representing the RSP, Sherpa will contest from the Kalchini (ST) seat in North Bengal, a region where the Left is working to regain its once-strong foothold among tea garden workers and tribal communities.

Strategic Focus and Constituencies
The list covers a broad geographical range, from the hills of North Bengal to the industrial belts of Asansol and the urban centers of Kolkata.
• South Kolkata Strongholds: With nominations for Bhabanipore, Tollygunge, and Ballygunge, the Left is making a concerted effort to challenge the TMC in its metropolitan heartland by fielding academic and professional candidates.
• Industrial and Border Belts: The inclusion of candidates for Asansol North and constituencies like Metiabruz (where Monirul Islam has been placed) shows a focus on minority-dominated and industrial pockets where labor issues remain a central campaign theme.

Election Outlook
With this list, the Left Front has now declared candidates for the majority of the 294 seats. While heavyweights like Mohammad Salim and Sujan Chakraborty have not appeared on the first two lists—leading to speculation about their roles—the Front’s reliance on “new faces” and “clean images” like Afrin Begum and Partha Pratim Biswas marks a clear attempt to reinvent its image for the 2026 polls.

As the state moves toward a two-phase election, the Left-Congress-ISF alliance dynamics remain a work in progress, with roughly 20 seats still under negotiation to ensure a consolidated fight against the TMC and BJP.
