Legendary Cardiologist Dr. Mani Kumar Chhetri Passes Away at 106: End of an Era in Indian Medicine

It is a deeply somber day for the medical fraternity as India mourns the loss of legendary cardiologist Dr. Mani Kumar Chhetri, who passed away on April 5, 2026, at the age of 106. He breathed his last at his residence in Kolkata, following age-related ailments and complications from a head injury sustained after a fall two weeks ago.

Dr. Chhetri’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in Indian healthcare, defined by over eight decades of pioneering service, innovation, and mentorship.

A Pioneer in Indian Cardiology

Widely regarded as one of the founding figures of cardiology, diabetology, and endocrinology in India, Dr. Chhetri played a pivotal role in shaping modern medical practice in the country. In 1960, he became Director and Professor of the Cardiology Department at IPGMER and SSKM Hospital, where he laid the foundation for advanced cardiac care and clinical excellence.

Dr. Chhetri’s contributions extended beyond clinical practice. In 1976, he served as Director of West Bengal State Health Services, influencing healthcare policy and administration at a critical time. He was also the personal physician to former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, reflecting the immense trust placed in his medical expertise.

In recognition of his unparalleled service to medicine, the Government of India awarded him the prestigious Padma Shri in 1974. His contributions remain a benchmark for generations of healthcare professionals.
