Macron, Trump Push for Energy Truce and Ukraine Peace Talks

French President Emmanuel Macron met US President Donald Trump in New York after arriving for the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week. Macron said the two leaders agreed to coordinate efforts on energy security and the war in Ukraine.

According to Macron, France and the United States will work together to ease tensions in energy markets, protect critical infrastructure in the Middle East and safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait has become a major focus of international concern amid disruptions to energy flows. Reuters reported that vessel traffic through the waterway has fallen significantly during the ongoing regional tensions, adding pressure to global energy markets.

Macron also said France and the US would pool their efforts to seek a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure and Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. He stressed the need to protect civilian populations and to begin serious negotiations on conditions for peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The discussions come as diplomatic efforts around an energy-related truce in the Russia-Ukraine conflict receive renewed attention. Reuters reported that Macron had discussed initiatives with Trump aimed at establishing a moratorium concerning attacks on the energy sector.

Macron has also previously called for protecting civilian and energy infrastructure and for maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest Macron-Trump discussions therefore bring together two interconnected issues — global energy security and efforts to reduce attacks on infrastructure in the Russia-Ukraine war — alongside broader diplomatic engagement during the UN General Assembly.
