This is the story of Mokshada Ekadashi
In some kingdom there was a king named Vaikhanas. One night the king saw in a dream that his father was in hell. In the morning he told this to the Brahmins. The king said to the Brahmins, “Tell me some remedy by which my father can be freed from the tortures of hell.” The Brahmins said that “Nearby is the ashram of the mountain sage, he can solve your problem.” The king went to him with great hope. There he told the whole thing to the sage.
After listening to the king, Parvat Muni closed his eyes and said after some time that “Your father’s condition has happened because of the sins of his previous births.”
When the king asked the remedy for this, the sage said that “You should fast on Mokshada Ekadashi and pledge the virtue of that fast to your father. With its effect your father will be freed from hell.
The king did the same and with its effect his father got freedom from hell. In this way, whoever fasts on Mokshada Ekadashi, his forefathers are saved.
