Reflecting on the memorable journey, Modi said that during the visit, a New Zealander gifted him three items: a muffler, a cap, and a pair of gloves. He revealed that the muffler continues to hold a special place in his life and that he still keeps it close to him.
“Around 25–30 years ago, when I wasn't part of any government and no one knew me in public life, I had the opportunity to visit New Zealand. At that time, someone gave me three items—a muffler, a cap and a glove. This muffler was given to me by a New Zealander, and I keep it close to me,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister's emotional recollection resonated with members of the Indian diaspora, highlighting the warmth and hospitality he experienced in New Zealand long before assuming public office.
His remarks also underscored the enduring people-to-people ties between India and New Zealand, reinforcing the importance of cultural connections that continue to strengthen bilateral relations.
