India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a crucial telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Saturday, March 21, 2026, amid escalating tensions in West Asia. During the discussion, Dr. Jaishankar extended warm greetings on the occasion of Nowruz and Eid, underscoring India’s continued diplomatic outreach even as regional uncertainties intensify. The two leaders reviewed the evolving situation in West Asia, with particular emphasis on the broader geopolitical and economic implications of the ongoing conflict. Concerns around stability, security, and global supply chains were central to the dialogue. This marks at least the fourth interaction between the ministers since hostilities escalated on February 28, 2026. Previous conversations reflect consistent diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Tehran. Discussions also touched upon key strategic issues, including maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global energy route. The safety and well-being of nearly one crore Indian nationals residing in the Gulf region remained a priority. Additionally, both sides acknowledged the importance of cooperation within BRICS, particularly as India currently holds the chair. Reiterating India’s stance, Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the need for peace, de-escalation, and a return to dialogue, aligning with New Delhi’s broader commitment to stability in the region. The conversation is part of India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to engage key regional stakeholders and navigate the complexities arising from the current crisis in West Asia.
