Kota bus crash kills eight on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
The Kota bus crash killed at least eight people on Saturday, October 17, when a vehicle carrying passengers from Bhopal left the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and fell into a drain in Rajasthan's Kota district. The accident happened at about 6 am within the Simliya police station area, according to police and district officials.
The passengers were travelling to Khatu Shyamji temple in Sikar district. Reports put the number aboard at around 23 to 25, with one account describing them as members of a family who had left Bhopal at about 7 pm on Friday.
The bus fell into a drain about 15 feet deep. Mud and standing water made it difficult for rescuers to reach those trapped inside, and cranes were brought in to recover the vehicle.
Injured taken to two Kota hospitals
Police said the injured received treatment at MBS Hospital and New Medical College Hospital in Kota. Three ambulances were used to transport passengers from the scene, according to Simliya station house officer Nand Singh.
According to district collector Piyush Samariya, New Medical College Hospital received 17 passengers, while MBS Hospital received eight. Seven were declared dead at the former and one at the latter, according to his account.
Other accounts gave a lower initial count of injured passengers. The identities of the dead and injured were still being established, police said, while details of the Kota bus crash continued to emerge.
The cause had not been established, and an investigation was underway. Early suggestions that the driver lost control remained preliminary.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed sorrow over the deaths and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He said the authorities had been directed to arrange appropriate treatment and assistance for those affected.
