Sarvesh Kushare Wins Historic High Jump Silver at Asian Games 2026

Indian high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare delivered a landmark performance at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, clearing 2.25 metres to win the silver medal in the men’s high jump final.

Kushare’s podium finish ends a 56-year wait for India in the men’s high jump at the Asian Games. India’s previous medal in the event came at the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games, where Bhim Singh won bronze.

Kushare Misses Gold on Countback

The final went down to the wire, with Kushare clearing the same height of 2.25m as gold medallist Fu Chao-hsuan of Chinese Taipei. However, the Indian athlete was placed second after the countback rules were applied.

South Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok secured the bronze medal.

The result represents a significant turnaround for Kushare, who came agonisingly close to an Asian Games medal three years ago.

From Fourth in Hangzhou to Silver in Aichi-Nagoya

At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, Kushare finished fourth despite clearing an impressive 2.26m, narrowly missing the podium.

His strong 2026 season had already included a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, setting the stage for another major international performance.

At Aichi-Nagoya, Kushare converted that previous disappointment into a historic silver medal, restoring India to the Asian Games podium in the men’s high jump after more than five decades.

The medal also adds to India’s athletics campaign at the 2026 Asian Games and highlights Kushare’s consistency on the international stage.
