Tejaswin Shankar Wins Decathlon Bronze at Asian Games 2026

Aichi-Nagoya: Indian track and field star Tejaswin Shankar secured the bronze medal in the men’s decathlon at the 2026 Asian Games, finishing the gruelling two-day competition with an impressive 7,934 points.

Shankar produced a strong finish in the final 1500m race to secure his place on the podium and add another medal to India’s athletics tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won the gold medal with 8,123 points, while China’s Chen Xinghua claimed silver after accumulating 8,012 points.

Maruyama maintained consistency across all ten events and established a decisive advantage during the technical field disciplines, particularly the pole vault and throwing events. He eventually finished behind Shankar in the 1500m but had done enough to secure the continental title.

Chen moved into second position on the second day after strong performances in the discus and javelin, becoming one of three athletes to cross the 8,000-point mark.

Historic Asian Games Achievement

Shankar’s bronze marks another significant milestone in his career. Following his silver medal at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games, he becomes the first Indian male athlete to win back-to-back Asian Games medals in the decathlon.

The performance also underlines Shankar’s successful transition from being one of India’s leading high jumpers to becoming a major force in the demanding multi-event discipline.

The decathlon features ten events across two days, testing athletes across sprinting, jumping and throwing disciplines as well as endurance.

Shankar’s podium finish added to a memorable day for Indian athletics at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, further strengthening the country’s medal haul in track and field.
