Suvendu Adhikari Orders Crackdown on Hospital Middlemen

In a surprise inspection on Thursday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made an unannounced visit to Swasthya Bhavan in Salt Lake while on his way to Nabanna, signalling the state government's renewed focus on improving healthcare governance and patient services.

The Chief Minister inspected the newly established Central Control Room, designed to monitor government hospitals across West Bengal in real time. He later chaired a high-level review meeting attended by the State Health Minister, Minister of State for Health, the Health Secretary and senior officials to assess the functioning of the state's healthcare system.

Zero Tolerance Against Hospital Middlemen

During the meeting, Suvendu Adhikari issued a strong warning against middlemen operating inside government hospitals. He directed officials to immediately identify and dismantle such networks, stating that harassment of patients would not be tolerated.

The Central Control Room will employ advanced surveillance technology to monitor hospital premises. Individuals found loitering inside hospitals for two consecutive days without a valid reason will be flagged for verification and necessary action. The Chief Minister also instructed the Health Department to introduce colour-coded laminated identity cards for different categories of hospital staff to enhance security and accountability.

Focus on Healthcare Infrastructure

Reviewing the state's medical facilities, the Chief Minister said government hospitals require stronger infrastructure to effectively respond to emergencies and disasters. He stressed the need to establish dedicated trauma centres across West Bengal and called for the utilisation of unused spaces within government hospitals to expand healthcare services.

SSKM Hospital to Get More Beds

To ease the patient burden at SSKM Hospital, the Chief Minister announced that 100 additional beds have already been added. He further revealed that another 200–250 beds are expected to become operational before the Durga Puja festival, significantly increasing the hospital's capacity.

Adani Group to Build International Hospital

The Chief Minister also announced a major investment in the state's healthcare sector, stating that the Adani Group will establish a world-class international hospital in New Town. The foundation stone for the project is expected to be laid within the next few months.

He added that while the hospital will offer international-standard healthcare services, a dedicated number of beds will be reserved for economically weaker and underprivileged patients, ensuring access to affordable treatment.

The surprise visit and key announcements underscore the West Bengal government's push to improve transparency, strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and enhance medical services across the state.
