Suvendu Adhikari Questions Mamata Over Anant Maharaj Award Row
KT- Suvendu Adhikari

Suvendu Adhikari has questioned former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the decision to confer the Banga Bibhushan, the state’s highest civilian honour, on Rajya Sabha MP Anant Maharaj.

Speaking about the controversy surrounding Anant Maharaj, Adhikari also raised allegations concerning the handling of a financial scam case linked to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He alleged that the previous government had delayed permission sought by central agencies to file a chargesheet against a police officer.

The BJP leader further questioned the political debate surrounding the nomination of individuals to the Rajya Sabha and argued that several parties have nominated people from non-political backgrounds to the Upper House.

Suvendu Adhikari Questions Banga Bibhushan Decision

Suvendu Adhikari specifically questioned who had decided to confer the Banga Bibhushan on Anant Maharaj.

The remarks come amid controversy surrounding Anant Maharaj after the West Bengal government withdrew the prestigious award following his controversial comments concerning Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Adhikari pointed out that the award had been given during the previous administration and questioned the criticism directed at the current government over the matter.

He asked why the discussion should not also focus on the circumstances under which Anant Maharaj was originally selected for the state's highest honour.

β€˜Who Gave Him the Banga Bibhushan?’

Referring to the controversy, Adhikari questioned the decision-making process behind the award.

He said that if the issue concerning Anant Maharaj was being discussed, attention should also be given to who had conferred the Banga Bibhushan on him.
The BJP leader's remarks appear to be aimed at shifting the political focus towards the earlier decision to honour Anant Maharaj rather than solely examining the state's subsequent decision to withdraw the award.

RG Kar Financial Scam Allegations Raised

During his statement, Suvendu Adhikari also referred to the alleged financial irregularities case involving RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

He claimed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to file a chargesheet against a police officer.

According to Adhikari, the request remained pending for around one and a half years during Mamata Banerjee's tenure as Chief Minister.

These are allegations made by Adhikari, and the claims should be viewed in that context.

Political Debate Over Investigation

The RG Kar case and allegations of financial irregularities have been a major political issue in West Bengal. Central investigating agencies have been involved in separate investigations connected with the matter.

Adhikari used the issue to question the previous state government's handling of investigations and permissions required for prosecution.

The allegations have added another layer to the continuing political confrontation between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress.

Debate Over Rajya Sabha Nominations

Suvendu Adhikari also addressed the issue of political parties nominating individuals from non-political backgrounds to the Rajya Sabha.

He argued that several parties, including the Trinamool Congress, have sent professionals and other public figures to the Upper House.

As an example, he referred to lawyer Menaka Guruswamy, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in the past.

Adhikari's broader argument was that the nomination of individuals who are not traditional politicians is not unusual in Indian politics.

Anant Maharaj and the Banga Bibhushan Controversy
The controversy surrounding Anant Maharaj intensified after remarks he made concerning Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Following the controversy, the West Bengal government announced the withdrawal of his Banga Bibhushan award.

Anant Maharaj subsequently expressed regret, saying that if his remarks had hurt anyone's sentiments, he was sorry.

The episode has triggered a wider political debate over the state's highest civilian honour, the historical legacy of Netaji and the role of political leaders in public discourse.

Political Reactions Continue

The Banga Bibhushan controversy has become another point of confrontation between the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal.

Suvendu Adhikari's latest comments seek to highlight the fact that Anant Maharaj originally received the award under the previous government.

At the same time, the controversy has raised broader questions about the criteria used to select recipients for major state honours and the circumstances under which such awards can subsequently be withdrawn.

The political debate over Anant Maharaj's Banga Bibhushan is likely to continue, with both the BJP and TMC expected to put forward competing arguments.

Suvendu Adhikari's comments have expanded the discussion beyond the withdrawal of the award, bringing in questions about its original conferment, Rajya Sabha nominations and allegations concerning the RG Kar financial case.

For now, the Banga Bibhushan decision remains a prominent political issue in West Bengal, while the allegations concerning the RG Kar investigation continue to be contested by political parties.
