Suvendu Adhikari Slams Mamata Banerjee on “Appeasement Politics” Allegation

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, questioning her presence at the Red Road Eid-ul-Fitr prayer gathering and alleging that the move was driven by a broader political strategy of appeasement. Addressing the media on Saturday, Adhikari accused the Chief Minister of using a religious occasion to project a political message. He argued that participation in religious gatherings should not be intertwined with political positioning, especially during sacred observances. Adhikari emphasized the need to maintain a clear separation between politics and religion. He suggested that public leaders should exercise restraint in participating in rituals of other faiths, particularly during formal religious proceedings. During the interaction, a member of the Muslim community reportedly supported Adhikari’s remarks, stating that religious protocols generally discourage the presence of non-adherents during the formal reading of Namaz. “While mutual respect between communities is essential, there must be a clear boundary to ensure that religious rituals are not used as a stage for political messaging,” Adhikari said. The BJP leader further alleged that the Chief Minister’s actions resembled a calculated attempt to consolidate political support. He drew parallels with historical instances where political leaders allegedly leveraged religious platforms for influence. Shifting focus to administrative matters, Adhikari also raised concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He questioned the Chief Minister’s decision to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the SIR process, suggesting that it was an attempt to divert attention from governance challenges and protect what he termed “irregular” entries in the voter list. Adhikari highlighted concerns about alleged exclusions from the revised voter rolls, noting that several individuals reportedly face difficulties in providing required documentation despite tribunal mechanisms in place. The Opposition Leader dismissed recent promises made by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), describing them as “farcical” and lacking credibility. He reiterated that the BJP remains focused on defeating the current state government. “The BJP’s primary objective is to defeat the current administration, and I am committed to that goal,” Adhikari stated.
