G20 Atlanta meeting: Jaishankar to join energy and security talks
The G20 Atlanta meeting is set to bring External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar together with other foreign ministers on Friday, October 30, for talks on energy supply chains and economic security. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will chair the gathering.
Jaishankar reached Atlanta late on Thursday for the two-day programme. Rubio is scheduled to open the deliberations with remarks on geopolitical issues, followed by a session linking energy with economic growth.
According to the US State Department, the discussions will examine international crises contributing to economic disruption. The agenda includes pressures on shipping access, energy supplies, food security and supply chains.
Quad discussions alongside ministerial programme
The foreign ministers of India, the United States, Japan and Australia will also meet on the sidelines of the G20 Atlanta meeting. It will be their second Quad ministerial gathering of the year.
Those discussions come before a possible Quad leaders' meeting that the United States is expected to host in the Philippines the following month. The reported plan for the leaders' gathering remains provisional.
The State Department has linked the Atlanta talks to preparations for the broader economic programme facing G20 leaders. President Donald Trump is scheduled to host their summit in Miami on December 14 and 15.
Washington says it wants the ministerial to focus on growth and economic security. Its stated approach connects international security problems with the risks they create for commerce, essential supplies and economic prosperity.
Jaishankar's travel schedule continues beyond the United States. After the G20 and Quad engagements in Atlanta, he is due to visit Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
That meeting is scheduled for November 1 to 4. The Atlanta discussions and subsequent Commonwealth visit form the sequence of diplomatic engagements described in the reports, with no outcomes from the ministerial talks announced in the supplied material.
