TMC to Challenge LoP Appointment in Calcutta High Court, Kalyan Banerjee Announces Legal Battle
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced that it will approach the Calcutta High Court challenging the appointment of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly, alleging that the decision made by the Speaker is illegal.
Speaking to the media after a meeting at TMC Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence, senior party MP Kalyan Banerjee said the party has decided to seek legal intervention.
"We have decided that the LoP appointed by the Speaker is illegal. We are approaching the Court against this on Monday. We will file a petition before the High Court," Banerjee stated.
The TMC leader also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of targeting Trinamool Congress workers through violence and what he described as false legal cases.
"We will fight against the manner in which BJP is killing TMC workers and lodging false cases against them. We will fight on the streets, we will fight in Court," he said.
The development signals a fresh escalation in the political confrontation between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP in West Bengal. The legal challenge is expected to bring renewed focus to the constitutional and procedural aspects surrounding the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.
Political observers will closely watch the outcome of the proposed High Court petition, which could have significant implications for the state's legislative politics.
