The World No. 39 Indian duo staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the Chinese pair 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 in a thrilling three-game encounter.
The victory becomes even more significant given the pedigree of Jia Yifan, a four-time World Champion and reigning Olympic champion.
Treesa and Gayatri’s historic run has ended India’s 15-year wait for a women’s doubles medal at the World Championships. The last time India won a medal in the discipline was in 2011, when Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa claimed bronze.
The achievement also extends India’s remarkable streak of winning at least one medal at every BWF World Championships since 2011.
With their place in the semifinals secured, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have now etched their names in Indian badminton history.
