Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand celebrate their historic bronze medal at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi.

India’s unseeded duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand created history at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi, securing a bronze medal in women’s doubles.

The world No. 39 pair produced a spirited performance against top seeds and world No. 1 combination Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China in their semifinal at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Treesa and Gayatri won the opening game 21-18 but the Chinese pair fought back to take the second 21-13. Liu and Tan then controlled the decider, winning 21-8 after a 71-minute battle.

Despite the semifinal defeat, the bronze medal marks a significant milestone for Indian badminton. It ends India’s 15-year wait for a women’s doubles medal at the BWF World Championships, since Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won bronze in 2011.

France Makes History

The semifinals also produced a landmark achievement for France.

Ninth-seeded Alex Lanier defeated Canada’s Victor Lai 16-21, 21-13, 21-14 to reach the men’s singles final.

In mixed doubles, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue defeated China’s Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin 19-21, 21-13, 21-11 to advance to the final.

Lanier and the Gicquel-Delrue pair have therefore secured France’s first-ever BWF World Championships final appearances, marking a historic day for French badminton.
