Trump Announces 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos and Steel

US President Donald Trump has announced a sharp increase in tariffs on Canadian automotive products and steel, saying tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel from Canada will rise to 50% from January 1, 2027.

Trump accused Canada of taking advantage of the United States for years and criticised Canadian tariffs on American farmers and agricultural products. He said the new measures are aimed at addressing what his administration considers unfair trade practices.

The US President also said companies could avoid the new tariffs by shifting production and building their products in the United States, reinforcing his administration’s push to expand domestic manufacturing.

"We don't need Canada, they need us!" Trump said while announcing the tariff plan.
Trump further declared that "Canada will be treated like a State no longer!", signalling a tougher approach to the longstanding economic relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

The proposed tariff increase could have significant implications for the North American automotive and steel industries, given the deep integration of supply chains between the United States and Canada.

The announcement is expected to intensify debate over US-Canada trade relations and could trigger further negotiations or retaliatory measures from Ottawa.
