Union Cabinet Approves Odisha Coastal Highway Project to Boost Connectivity, Tourism and Disaster Resilience

The Union Cabinet has approved the long-awaited Coastal Highway project in Odisha, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity across the state's cyclone-prone coastal belt.

Addressing a Cabinet briefing, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project was part of the BJP-NDA government's manifesto and had been a longstanding demand of the people of Odisha. He emphasized that the state's coastal region frequently faces severe cyclones, making robust transport infrastructure essential for both disaster preparedness and economic development.

The proposed highway will connect key coastal districts and support a range of economic activities, including fishing, betel cultivation, and paddy farming. The project is also expected to strengthen access to some of Odisha's most important tourism, pilgrimage, and commercial hubs, including Puri, Chilika Lake, and Paradip Port.

According to Vaishnaw, improved coastal connectivity will facilitate smoother movement of people and goods, enhance tourism potential, and provide critical support during natural disasters. The project is expected to play a significant role in accelerating economic growth while improving resilience in one of India's most vulnerable coastal regions.

The Coastal Highway is being viewed as a transformative infrastructure project that will integrate major economic and cultural centers along Odisha's coastline, bringing long-term benefits to local communities and businesses.
