Von der Leyen, Guterres Discuss Path to Peace Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, held a timely and significant meeting with António Guterres, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated global action amid the escalating crisis in the Middle East. Speaking after the meeting, von der Leyen highlighted that the repercussions of the ongoing conflict are not confined to the region alone but have far-reaching global consequences. She stressed that the international community shares a collective responsibility to work towards de-escalation and pursue a diplomatic resolution. “The repercussions of the war in the Middle East are global, and it is our responsibility to work for de-escalation and a diplomatic solution,” she stated. Reaffirming Europe’s commitment to multilateralism, von der Leyen underscored that the European Union and its Member States remain the largest contributors to the United Nations, reflecting their continued support for global institutions and cooperative frameworks. She further reiterated the EU’s strong commitment to upholding international law and advancing a rules-based global order. “We are strongly committed to building a world where multilateral cooperation prevails,” she added. The meeting signals the European Union’s proactive diplomatic stance in addressing global conflicts and reinforces its role as a key player in promoting peace, stability, and international cooperation.
