WB CM Suspends Four Police Officers Over Misconduct

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced disciplinary action against four police officers, asserting that his government will maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards police bias, misconduct and abuse of power.

Addressing the West Bengal Legislative Assembly during a statement on the Home Department, the Chief Minister referred to several incidents that allegedly took place between 2021 and 2026 and said the government was committed to ensuring neutrality, accountability and transparency in policing.

In the Kaliaganj case, ASI Mozammel Hossain of Kaliaganj Police Station was suspended over the death of Mrityunjay Barman in North Dinajpur.

The Chief Minister also announced the suspension of Sadhan Das, the then Investigating Officer of Burtolla Police Station, over the alleged harassment of former IPS officer Pankaj Dutta under the previous administration. Subarna Dutta Chowdhury, currently serving in the Special Branch, was also suspended in connection with the same case.

In another action, police officer Amalendu Biswas was suspended over allegations of assaulting devotees during the Jagaddhatri Puja idol immersion procession. The Chief Minister also ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter.

Regarding the Kakdwip Kali idol desecration incident, the Chief Minister criticised the police's handling of public protests and announced the suspension of former Sundarban Police District SP Koteswara Rao, alleging his role in the police operation during the incident.

Reiterating his government's stand, the Chief Minister said that biased conduct or misuse of authority by police personnel would not be tolerated. He added that previous complaints and allegations against police officials would be reviewed thoroughly and that appropriate legal and departmental action would be taken wherever necessary.
