The West Bengal government on Friday suspended three senior IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, over alleged lapses in the initial investigation into the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case.
The other officers suspended are former deputy commissioners Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta.
According to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the suspension orders were issued following a departmental inquiry initiated against the officers over alleged mishandling of the high-profile case.
Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat, the Chief Minister alleged that the officers were involved in procedural lapses during the early phase of the probe into the brutal crime that took place at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
Adhikari further alleged that the officers attempted to offer money to the victim’s parents and conducted an “unauthorised press conference” related to the investigation.
The RG Kar rape-murder case had triggered nationwide outrage and massive protests by doctors and civil society groups, demanding justice and accountability in the investigation process.
The state government has now initiated departmental proceedings against the suspended officers as part of a fresh review of the handling of the case.
The development marks a major turn in one of West Bengal’s most politically sensitive and widely discussed criminal investigations in recent years.
