West Bengal Underground Power Cables Project to Transform Six Cities

West Bengal Underground Power Cables are set to become a major part of the state's urban power infrastructure, with the West Bengal government planning to replace overhead electricity networks with underground cabling across six cities.

The first phase of the ambitious infrastructure project will cover Contai, Egra, Jalpaiguri, Balurghat, Alipurduar and Suri.

The initiative is aimed at modernising electricity distribution networks, improving safety and reliability, and reducing the network of overhead electricity wires currently visible across urban roads.

The project is expected to bring a significant change to the appearance and functionality of the electricity distribution system in the selected cities.

Six West Bengal Cities Selected for Underground Cabling

The first phase of the West Bengal Underground Power Cables project covers cities across both South Bengal and North Bengal.

The selected cities are:

Contai, East Midnapore

Egra, East Midnapore

Jalpaiguri, North Bengal

Balurghat, South Dinajpur

Alipurduar, North Bengal

Suri, Birbhum

The geographical spread of the project indicates an effort to modernise electricity distribution infrastructure across different regions of the state.

Contai and Egra to Get Underground Power Network
In East Midnapore, the existing overhead electricity networks in Contai and Egra will be replaced with underground cables.

The conversion is expected to reduce the presence of hanging electricity wires over roads and improve the overall organisation of the power distribution network.

North Bengal Cities Included

Three cities in North Bengal have been included in the first phase — Jalpaiguri, Balurghat and Alipurduar.

The proposed underground cabling system will replace existing overhead networks in the identified areas and introduce a more modern distribution arrangement.

Suri Also Included in First Phase

Suri in Birbhum has also been included in the underground power cabling programme.

With Suri's inclusion, the first phase covers cities from different parts of West Bengal, extending the modernisation drive beyond a single region.

WBSEDCL Invites E-Tenders

The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) has already invited separate e-tenders for the six cities through its Project-3 division.

The tender process marks an important step towards implementing the underground cabling programme.

Separate tenders for the selected cities will facilitate the planned infrastructure work and allow the project to move towards the execution stage.

The initiative will involve replacing sections of the existing overhead electricity distribution network with underground cables.
