WTO Reform was among the key issues discussed during a meeting between India and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), at Vanijya Bhawan. The discussions focused on strengthening the rules-based multilateral trading system and determining the way forward for reforms at the WTO.

The meeting also addressed the importance of ensuring that development concerns and the interests of the Global South remain an integral part of the multilateral trade agenda.

India reiterated its commitment to a fair, inclusive and equitable trading system that serves the interests of all WTO members.

India and WTO Chief Discuss WTO Reform

The meeting at Vanijya Bhawan provided an opportunity to exchange views on the future of the global trading system and the role of the WTO in addressing emerging challenges.

A major focus of the discussions was WTO Reform, with India highlighting the need for a strong and effective rules-based multilateral trading system.

Strengthening the Rules-Based Trading System

A rules-based trading system provides a common framework through which WTO members conduct international trade and address trade-related issues.

India's discussions with the WTO Director-General emphasised the importance of strengthening this multilateral framework while ensuring that the system remains responsive to the needs and concerns of its diverse membership.

The conversation also looked at the road ahead for WTO reform and the importance of maintaining a multilateral approach to global trade.

Global South Interests at the Centre of WTO Agenda

Another important issue discussed during the meeting was the need to ensure that development concerns and the interests of the Global South remain an integral part of the WTO's multilateral agenda.

Developing and emerging economies have specific priorities and challenges related to trade, development and economic growth. India has emphasised the importance of ensuring that these concerns receive adequate consideration in discussions on the future of the global trading system.

Development Concerns and Inclusive Trade

For India, an effective multilateral trading system should support development while providing opportunities for countries at different stages of economic growth.

The discussion with the WTO Director-General highlighted the importance of keeping development issues central to the reform process.

As conversations around WTO Reform continue, India's position remains focused on ensuring that changes to the global trading framework take into account the interests of the wider WTO membership.
