Abhishek Banerjee Slams BJP, ECI Over ‘90 Lakh Voters Deleted’ Claim, Vows Restoration if TMC Returns to Power

Abhishek Banerjee, General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the alleged deletion of nearly 90 lakh names from voter lists in West Bengal. Addressing the issue, Banerjee reassured citizens that all deleted names would be restored if the Trinamool Congress returns to power. “I reassure that when TMC wins, the names of everyone cut from the voter list will be added back,” he said. He further challenged the BJP and the Election Commission to clarify their stance, questioning the basis of the deletions. “The BJP and Election Commission should state whether the 90 lakh people whose names were removed are all Bangladeshis,” Banerjee remarked. Highlighting the demographic angle, he added that as per available claims, nearly 63% of those removed were Hindus. “If that is the case, then are they also being labelled as Bangladeshis or Rohingya?” he questioned, intensifying the political debate around voter eligibility and alleged disenfranchisement. The remarks come amid rising tensions between the ruling TMC in West Bengal and the BJP, with voter list revisions becoming a major flashpoint ahead of upcoming elections. The controversy has sparked widespread political reactions, with opposition parties accusing central agencies of bias, while the BJP maintains that voter verification is necessary to ensure electoral integrity.
