Air India on Tuesday announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson, marking a significant leadership transition for the airline.
In an internal message addressed to employees, Wilson reflected on the transformative journey of the airline since its privatisation under the Tata Group. He highlighted key milestones, including the acquisition and successful merger of four airlines, a complete shift from public to private sector practices, and a comprehensive overhaul of leadership, workforce, and organizational culture.
Wilson also underscored the airline’s modernization drive, which included the upgrade of systems, introduction of new onboard products, enhanced service and operational standards, and the addition of over 100 aircraft to the fleet. He noted that the interior refit of legacy narrowbody aircraft is nearing completion, while deliveries of widebody aircraft featuring newly designed interiors are already underway.
The outgoing CEO further pointed to the development of critical infrastructure such as South Asia’s largest aviation training academy, flight simulator facilities, a flying school, and a greenfield maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) base—initiatives aimed at supporting Air India’s long-term growth ambitions.
Acknowledging the challenges faced during his tenure, including global supply chain disruptions, geopolitical conflicts, airspace restrictions, and rising fuel costs, Wilson praised employees for their resilience and dedication.
Announcing his decision to step down, Wilson stated that with a crucial phase of aircraft deliveries from the airline’s nearly 600-aircraft orderbook expected to begin from 2027, it is the right time for new leadership to take charge. He confirmed that he will continue in his role until a smooth transition is completed.
Calling his tenure a “true honour,” Wilson expressed pride in contributing to Air India’s resurgence and reaffirmed his continued support for the airline as it aims to establish itself as a world-class global carrier with an Indian identity.
