Amit Shah Says Sardar Patel Shaped History Through Action
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, describing him as a leader whose actions shaped history and transformed India rather than one whose legacy rested mainly on speeches or public projection.
Speaking in New Delhi on the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, observed on Patel’s 151st birth anniversary, Shah said history was shaped by different kinds of personalities.
‘Some Speak Little but Shape Monumental Events’
Shah said:
“There are individuals who speak very little, but through concrete actions, shape monumental events that history is compelled to acknowledge.”
He contrasted such leaders with those whose speeches, ideas and public personality become central to how history remembers them.
Shah presented Patel as belonging firmly to the second category — a leader whose record, in his view, was defined by action.
Shah Highlights Patel’s Role in India’s Integration
The Home Minister said Patel played a decisive role in integrating hundreds of princely states after Independence and laying the foundations of a united India.
Shah said Patel accomplished the difficult task of political integration in just 1,218 days, at a time when many observers had doubts about whether newly independent India would remain united.
Patel Remembered on 151st Birth Anniversary
October 31 is observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, to commemorate Patel’s contribution to national integration.
Shah flagged off the Run for Unity in New Delhi and administered the Unity Pledge during the programme.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Ministers of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and Bandi Sanjay Kumar were among those present.
Shah Calls India’s Diversity a Strength
Shah also said India’s linguistic, cultural and religious diversity should be viewed as a source of strength rather than weakness.
He linked that idea to Patel’s vision of national unity and said India had built a shared national identity through dialogue, trust and inclusion despite its many differences.
Patel’s Administrative Legacy Highlighted
Earlier in the day, Shah also credited Patel with establishing the All India Services and strengthening the administrative foundations of independent India.
He described Patel as an architect of national unity whose contribution extended from the integration of princely states to institution-building and farmers’ movements such as the Kheda and Bardoli Satyagrahas.
The Amit Shah Sardar Patel remarks formed part of nationwide observances marking National Unity Day and celebrating Patel’s contribution to the political and administrative consolidation of India.
