Australia Punch Their Knockout Ticket

Australia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after battling to a disciplined 0-0 draw against Paraguay in their final Group D match. The result ensured the Socceroos finished as Group D runners-up, while Paraguay must wait to discover whether they advance as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Australia started brightly and controlled much of the contest, repeatedly creating danger down the right flank through Jordan Bos, Aiden O'Neill and Cristian Volpato. The trio combined effectively to stretch Paraguay's disciplined defence, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce.

Jackson Irvine came closest early on, forcing goalkeeper Orlando Gill into a sharp save just three minutes into the match. Despite Australia's attacking intent, Paraguay remained compact and resilient throughout the first half.

Paraguay made an attacking change after the interval, introducing Mauricio for Alexandro Maidana, but the match continued in a similar pattern with few chances at either end. Jordan Bos nearly broke the deadlock late in the game after a brilliant solo run, only to see his effort drift narrowly wide of the far post.

The stalemate was enough for Australia to secure second place in Group D. The Socceroos will now face the runners-up from Group G in Dallas on 3 July, while Paraguay anxiously await confirmation of their World Cup fate.

Player of the Match: Aiden O'Neill (Australia).
