West Bengal Govt to Table UCC Bill Next Week

The Suvendy Adhikari-led Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal plans to
introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state Legislative Assembly on June 29.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shankar Ghosh said that a draft of the bill will be emailed to all MLAs before being placed for discussion and a vote on Monday.

If passed, West Bengal will become the fourth state in India to implement a common civil code, after Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam.

Enacting the UCC within six months was a flagship campaign promise of the BJP before they defeated Trinamool Congress to come into power.

The bill seeks to replace religion-based personal laws with uniform rules governing marriage age, inheritance rights, a ban on polygamy, and the mandatory registration of live-in relationships. Scheduled Tribes are expected to be exempted.

Since BJP have two-third majority of 207 MLAs in the 294-member assembly, passing the bill is not expected to face parliamentary hurdles.

The state government also aims to introduce the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-social Activities Bill, 2026, which will allow authorities to order up to 12 months of preventive detention for designated offenders and empower district heads to issue externment orders.
