Brett Sylvia removed from Pentagon planning role amid Iran strike debate
Brett Sylvia has been removed as the Pentagon’s senior military planner by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, a defence official said in Washington on Wednesday, October 28. The change comes while President Donald Trump considers further military action against Iran.
The Army lieutenant general led the Joint Staff directorate responsible for strategy, plans and policy, commonly called J5. According to the official, who spoke anonymously about the personnel decision, no immediate successor had been identified and no reason had been provided for the dismissal.
The Joint Staff acknowledged Sylvia’s departure with a statement thanking him and his family for 32 years of service. The Pentagon did not immediately answer requests for comment late on Wednesday, according to reports.
Leadership change as military options remain open
The J5 directorate develops and coordinates military plans with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the president. Brett Sylvia had previously worked as its vice director and commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until May 2025.
He is the second officer to leave the director’s post under Hegseth. His predecessor, Lieutenant General Joseph McGee, was required to retire last October.
Two diplomats briefed on US discussions said regional allies had been warned to prepare for possible renewed attacks after the November 3 midterm elections. They were also advised to anticipate potential Iranian retaliation, but Trump had not reached a final decision on strikes.
A third American aircraft carrier and additional troops are heading towards the region, according to reports. Those movements accompany the administration’s consideration of further operations in the eight-month conflict.
The removal also follows broader changes in senior defence leadership. Hegseth announced last month that top officer positions should be reduced by 20 per cent by January 1, 2027, a plan criticised by some members of Congress.
