The tightly contested Round of 32 clash saw South Africa produce several impressive attacking moves in the opening half but fail to convert their chances. Canada also came close before halftime, with Aubrey Modiba clearing Moise Bombito's header off the line before goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a brilliant save to deny Tajon Buchanan.

Canada dominated after the restart, with Tani Oluwaseyi forcing another outstanding stop from Williams before Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared the rebound to keep the deadlock intact.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute injected fresh pace into Canada's attack. The breakthrough finally arrived in the closing stages when captain Stephen Eustaquio met a bouncing ball on the edge of the penalty area and fired a superb strike into the bottom corner, sealing a famous victory for Jesse Marsch's side.

Named Player of the Match, Eustaquio praised his teammates after the final whistle.
"We worked a lot to get this victory. We really wanted to give this win to all the Canadians. We just kept believing and kept pushing. It was an amazing goal, but when I shot I felt everyone shot with me. Everybody put a little bit of power on it and it went to the back of the net, so I'm very happy."

Looking ahead to the next round, he added:
"We will try to make Morocco and Netherlands see our game and feel, if they go through, they're going to get the hardest game they're going to face in this World Cup. I think we did an amazing job and it's going to be an amazing game next week."
Canada will now face the winner of the Netherlands vs Morocco Round of 32 clash at Houston Stadium as they continue their historic FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.

Despite the defeat, South Africa exit the tournament with pride after reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.
