Constitution Amendment Row: Kharge Says Stalin Acted in Nation’s Democratic Interest

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a strong defense of M. K. Stalin over the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, stating that Stalin’s opposition was driven by the need to safeguard democratic values rather than any political fear. Addressing supporters, Kharge said that once Stalin publicly opposed the bill, it triggered nationwide attention and debate. He emphasized that the move was rooted in protecting the Constitution and democratic framework of the country. Kharge also highlighted the contributions of southern and western states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana, crediting them for playing a major role in India’s economic growth and population control efforts. He remarked that these states made significant sacrifices, particularly in implementing family planning policies for the nation’s progress. Taking a swipe at political opponents, the Congress chief criticized what he described as empty promises and “guarantees,” asserting that his party has not only made commitments but has also delivered on them. The remarks come amid intensifying political discourse over the proposed amendment bill and its potential implications for federal balance and democratic institutions in India.
