French Open: Sabalenka ends Osaka campaign on way to quarters
Top ranked Aryna Sabalenka remained on course for her maiden French Open title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka in the fourt round.
The Belarusian reached the last four stage of Grand Slams for the 14th consecutive time as she played in the first women's night-session match at Roland Garros in three years.
Sabalenka takes on Russia's Diana Shnaider in the quarters after she shocked reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in Paris on Monday.
"The atmosphere and the attention that this match brought (is) going to show them that probably for the future they should consider putting at least sometimes women matches at night," Sabalenka said, after winning in 1 hour, 27 minutes.
Anna Kalinskaya defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7) to advance to her maiden French Open quarter-final as France's last remaining singles player Diane Parry exited with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska.
In the men's section, Italians Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi all moved to the quarter-finals.
Arnaldi edged past American Frances Tiafoe in a gruelling five-hour, 26-minute battle, while Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime completed a full set of Grand Slam quarter-final appearances by defeating Chile's Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets.
Paraguayan Adolfo Daniel Vallejo was fined $65,000 for comments directed at female umpires following his defeat earlier in the competition.
Away from the courts, Paris Saint-Germain players Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola presented the club's Champions League trophies to fans at Roland Garros following their recent European triumph over Arsenal.
