Germany Removes Airport Transit Visa Requirement for Indian Travelers from June 3

Indian nationals will no longer need an airport transit visa when travelling through German airports en route to another country, following a significant policy change announced by the German government.

The German Embassy in New Delhi stated that the lifting of the airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens was published in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on June 2, 2026, and will come into effect from June 3, 2026.

The move is being seen as a major step toward strengthening people-to-people connectivity between India and Germany.

According to the German Embassy, the decision implements an outcome of German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January 2026.

The exemption is expected to simplify travel for Indian passengers transiting through major German airports on their way to destinations across Europe, North America, and other regions.

Germany said the measure reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with India, facilitating mobility, and further enhancing economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The development is expected to benefit students, business travelers, tourists, and professionals who frequently use German airports as international transit hubs.
