Glenn Maxwell retirement ends Australia international career
The Glenn Maxwell retirement announcement has ended the Australian all-rounder's international career, with the 38-year-old discussing his decision on an episode of The Final Word podcast released on Tuesday. He is also stepping away from Victoria's domestic one-day and four-day competitions.
Maxwell said he wanted to devote more time to looking after his body for the tournaments remaining in his career. He had already retired from one-day internationals in 2025.
His Australia record spans seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20 internationals. Across those formats, he accumulated 339 Test runs, 3,990 ODI runs and 2,897 T20I runs, alongside 136 international wickets.
World Cup titles and an unbeaten double century
Maxwell was part of Australia's ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023 and its T20 World Cup triumph in 2021. He also scored five T20 international centuries, a tally matched by Rohit Sharma in the reports.
One of his defining innings came against Afghanistan at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Chasing 292, Australia had fallen to 91 for seven before Maxwell's unbeaten 201 transformed the match.
Despite severe cramps, he struck 21 fours and 10 sixes in 128 deliveries. His unbroken partnership of 202 with Pat Cummins carried Australia to victory with three wickets remaining.
The Glenn Maxwell retirement decision follows reduced involvement in Australia's plans. His last international appearance was against Oman at the T20 World Cup in February, and he was omitted from the 2026-27 central contract list.
Maxwell had hoped for a final Australia appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, the squad announced for the England series did not provide that opportunity, and he said he understood the selectors' direction.
His franchise commitments continue separately. Reports said his Melbourne Stars contract runs through the 2026-27 Big Bash League season.
