India Beat Germany 3–1 to Finish 5th at Hockey World Cup

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team signed off their Hockey World Cup campaign in style, defeating World No. 5 Germany 3–1 in the fifth-place classification match at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.

The victory marks India’s best World Cup finish in 52 years, equalling the benchmark set by the Indian team that finished fourth at the inaugural World Cup in 1974.

Germany Dominate Early, India Hold Firm

Germany controlled much of the opening half and created pressure through several penalty corners. However, Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia and a disciplined defensive unit stood firm to keep Germany from finding the breakthrough.
The teams went into half-time level at 0–0.

India Turn the Match Around

India came out firing after the interval and produced a remarkable three-goal burst.
In the 43rd minute, Ishika Chaudhary opened the scoring after winning possession and producing a superb reverse-lift finish.

Just a minute later, Navneet Kaur doubled India’s advantage by reacting quickest to a rebound from a penalty corner.
Navneet then struck again in the 47th minute, completing her brace with a skillful lift past the German goalkeeper to put India 3–0 ahead.

Germany managed a late consolation through Lynn Krings in the 59th minute, but India held on comfortably to secure a memorable 3–1 victory.

Historic World Cup Campaign

India’s fifth-place finish is particularly significant with 11 players making their World Cup debuts during the tournament.
Across six matches, India recorded two wins, three draws and one defeat, with their only loss coming against hosts and tournament heavyweights the Netherlands.

The victory over fifth-ranked Germany provides a major boost for Indian women’s hockey and offers valuable momentum heading into the team’s upcoming international assignments.
