Speaking on the current situation, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, emphasized that India’s energy ecosystem remains resilient and fully operational.
Refineries Running at Optimal Capacity
Addressing concerns around crude oil supply and refining operations, Sharma stated that India’s refineries are currently functioning at optimum capacity. She highlighted that the country has maintained sufficient crude oil inventories, ensuring there is no immediate disruption to fuel availability.
Retail fuel outlets across the country are also operating normally, providing further assurance to consumers amid global uncertainty.
Natural Gas Supply and PNG Expansion
On the natural gas front, the government has taken proactive steps to streamline supply and prioritize key sectors. City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities have been advised to give precedence to commercial connections to maintain economic continuity.
Additionally, state governments have been brought into coordination efforts, with a strategic decision to enhance supply allocation.
A notable move includes an additional 10% allocation aimed at accelerating the expansion of the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network. This has already translated into significant progress on the ground.
Rapid Increase in PNG Connections
Over the past three weeks alone, approximately 3.5 lakh domestic and commercial PNG connections have been either provided or activated. This expansion reflects the government’s focus on strengthening last-mile energy access while reducing dependence on traditional fuel distribution systems.
A System Built for Resilience
India’s response underscores a broader strategy of energy diversification, infrastructure readiness, and coordinated governance. Despite global volatility, the country continues to demonstrate stability in fuel supply chains and a forward-looking approach to energy distribution.
As the West Asia situation evolves, the government’s measured and proactive stance aims to safeguard both economic activity and consumer confidence.
