In a major step towards modernizing railway infrastructure, Indian Railways has announced the introduction of advanced composite sleepers to enhance passenger safety and travel comfort.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Railways, where the Railway Minister approved the use of composite sleepers specifically for bridge approaches and points & crossings—critical sections of railway tracks.
Unlike traditional iron and concrete sleepers, these new composite sleepers are significantly lighter while offering higher load-bearing capacity. They provide improved cushioning, which will ensure smoother rides for passengers, particularly when trains pass over bridges and complex track junctions.
Additionally, these sleepers are easier to install and maintain, and can be customized according to the specific geographical and operational conditions of each location. This flexibility is expected to enhance efficiency in track management and long-term durability.
The move marks a significant advancement in railway technology, reinforcing India’s commitment to safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly rail travel.
