Jaishankar Meets Wang Yi to Advance India-China Ties

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held extensive bilateral talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Regional Forum meetings in Manila, reaffirming India's commitment to a stable and cooperative relationship with China based on mutual respect and shared interests.

In his opening remarks, Jaishankar noted that relations between India and China have been gradually normalising since the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan in October 2024, with further momentum gained following their subsequent meeting in Tianjin.

The External Affairs Minister stressed that peace and tranquility along the border remain the essential foundation for normal bilateral relations. He said both countries have continued engagement since October 2024 to maintain stability in border areas and emphasised that existing mechanisms must receive sustained support.

Jaishankar reiterated that while differences between two major neighbouring nations are natural, diplomacy must ensure that differences do not become disputes, echoing the understanding reached by the leaders of both countries.

Highlighting recent positive developments, he welcomed the resumption of direct flights, updates to the visa regime, the restart of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, and the revival of border trade as significant steps toward restoring normal bilateral engagement.

The minister also underlined the need to address key economic concerns, including fair market access, a balanced trade relationship, and greater predictability in supply chains. He called for enhanced official exchanges, stronger people-to-people contacts, and the timely convening of bilateral dialogue mechanisms.

Referring to India's BRICS Chairship, Jaishankar thanked China for its support for various BRICS initiatives and activities during India's presidency.

Concluding his remarks, Jaishankar noted that the current global situation remains highly complex and expressed hope that the meeting would provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on pressing regional and international developments while continuing the process of strengthening bilateral ties.
