Jaishankar Pushes Stronger India-CELAC Economic Ties

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has called for stronger economic and development partnerships between India and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), highlighting new trade frameworks and wider cooperation during the India-CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the sidelines of the UN High-Level Week 2026 in New York.

Jaishankar said India is working to build robust and balanced economic partnerships with the region through a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Chile, a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Peru, and expansion of the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with MERCOSUR.
“Our objective is to create frameworks that are mutually beneficial,” Jaishankar said, while stressing the importance of making swift progress while remaining sensitive to the priorities and concerns of partner countries.

The External Affairs Minister also noted that India-CELAC trade has crossed USD 50 billion annually, while emphasising that there remains considerable scope to expand trade, investment and business partnerships. He called for stronger business-to-business linkages, improved connectivity and more predictable market access. 

Jaishankar highlighted India's expanding capabilities in technology, pharmaceuticals, digital infrastructure and skilled human resources, alongside CELAC's strengths and opportunities in areas including critical minerals, sustainable energy, agriculture and food resources.

He also underlined India's development cooperation with countries in the region, describing India's development record as an important strength in its international partnerships. He proposed greater collaboration in digital technologies, artificial intelligence, innovation and human-resource development.

Jaishankar further suggested that India and CELAC could consider upgrading their Annual Business Summit from next year, creating another platform for deeper commercial engagement.

Looking beyond economic cooperation, Jaishankar described CELAC as an important partner for shaping a more representative, balanced and inclusive global order. He said India and CELAC have a shared interest in strengthening the voice of the Global South in determining the future of the international system.
