June 20 to Be Observed as West Bengal Day Under BJP Government Proposal
The BJP-led West Bengal government has proposed observing June 20 as the official West Bengal Day, marking the state's formation and celebrating its rich historical, cultural, and linguistic heritage.
The proposal is rooted in the historical events of June 20, 1947, when Syama Prasad Mukherjee, then president of the Hindu Mahasabha, advocated for the partition of Bengal to ensure the creation of a separate West Bengal that would remain part of India during the country's partition.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, state ministers Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul said the government intends to institutionalize the observance through an official resolution and a structured commemorative framework. State authorities are expected to organize cultural events, public programmes, and awareness initiatives across West Bengal to mark the occasion annually.
The move reflects the BJP government's emphasis on recognizing what it describes as a defining moment in the state's history and acknowledging Mukherjee's role in shaping modern West Bengal.
Under the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration, Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year, was observed as "Bangla Dibas" or the state's foundation day. The TMC government had also adopted Rabindranath Tagore's iconic composition "Banglar Mati Banglar Jol" as the official state song.
The proposal is likely to trigger political debate, with differing interpretations of Bengal's historical identity and the significance of June 20 continuing to shape public discourse.
