Kolkata to Join India’s National Water Metro Network, Announces CM Suvendu Adhikari
Kolkata is set to become a key part of India’s proposed National Water Metro network, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Thursday.
The ambitious initiative, inspired by the successful Kochi Water Metro, aims to introduce modern water-based urban transportation systems in 18 cities across the country. The project seeks to reduce road congestion, promote sustainable mobility, and enhance urban connectivity through electric ferries and upgraded waterfront infrastructure.
Addressing a press conference at Nabanna, Adhikari said that the proposal has already received approval from Union Minister of State for Shipping Shantanu Thakur. The planned National Water Metro Policy envisions the development of modern terminals, jetties, and ferry services to integrate waterways into urban transport networks.
With its extensive river and inland waterway system, Kolkata is considered well-positioned to benefit from the project. The initiative is expected to offer residents a greener and more efficient alternative to road travel while strengthening the city's transportation ecosystem.
The move aligns with the Centre’s broader vision of promoting environmentally friendly transport solutions and maximizing the potential of India’s waterways for urban mobility.
