Left Front Fields 192 Candidates for West Bengal Assembly Elections

In a decisive step toward the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced a two-phase polling schedule, with voting set for April 23 and April 29. The announcement has immediately galvanized the state’s political machinery, triggering a rapid release of candidate lists from the primary contesting blocs.

The Left Front, a coalition primarily composed of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], the Communist Party of India (CPI), the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB), and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), released its first list today, naming 192 nominees. This initial slate represents a strategic blend of veteran leadership and a renewed focus on youth and female representation.

Among the prominent names featured in the Left Front’s list is Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, the veteran advocate and former Rajya Sabha MP, who has been fielded from the Jadavpur constituency in the southern outskirts of Kolkata. The coalition has also placed significant emphasis on its youth wing, nominating Minakshi Mukherjee, the President of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and a central committee member, to contest from Uttarpara in Hooghly district. Mukherjee previously gained national attention for her campaign in Nandigram during the 2021 elections.

Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified the electoral stakes by releasing a list of 144 candidates. In a move widely interpreted as a direct challenge to the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership, the BJP has nominated Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari to contest from two seats: his current constituency of Nandigram and the high-profile Bhabanipur seat, traditionally considered a stronghold of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP list also includes former state president Dilip Ghosh, who returns to contest from Kharagpur Sadar, and Swapan Dasgupta, fielded from the Rashbehari assembly seat.

With the Model Code of Conduct now in effect, the 2026 elections are poised to be a high-stakes battle for the state’s 294 assembly seats. For the Left Front, this election represents a critical effort to reclaim its legislative presence in West Bengal, while the BJP seeks to consolidate its position as the primary challenger to the ruling TMC. The counting of votes for all phases is scheduled for May 4, 2026.
