Mamata Banerjee Accuses Modi Government of ‘Gerrymandering’ via Women’s Bill, Claims BJP’s Decline Has Begun

West Bengal Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp political attack while addressing a public rally, accusing the Modi government of linking the Women’s Reservation Bill with delimitation for political gain. She alleged that the move was a calculated attempt to use a legitimate cause—women’s empowerment—as a cover to expand power through what she described as “gerrymandering,” adding that the strategy has failed and signals the beginning of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decline. Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee questioned the timing of the renewed push for the bill, stating that if genuine intent existed, it would not have been delayed for years after being passed in Parliament, only to resurface during election cycles. Reiterating her party’s commitment, she asserted that the Trinamool Congress has consistently supported greater political representation for women. She highlighted that the party has one of the highest shares of female elected representatives in both Parliament and the state assembly, emphasizing that her party delivers on women’s empowerment rather than relying on “political gimmicks.”
