Mamata Banerjee Accuses PM Modi of Misleading Nation Over Women’s Reservation and Delimitation

Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of misleading the nation in his recent address. In a strongly worded social media statement, Banerjee asserted that the All India Trinamool Congress has consistently supported greater political representation for women. She highlighted that TMC has one of the highest proportions of women representatives, with 37.9% in the Lok Sabha and 46% in the Rajya Sabha. Rejecting allegations of opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill, Banerjee clarified that her party’s objection lies with the proposed delimitation exercise. She accused the Centre of attempting to redraw political boundaries for electoral advantage, calling it an “assault on federal democracy” and a move that could disproportionately benefit BJP-ruled states. The TMC supremo also questioned the timing of the Women’s Reservation Bill, originally passed on September 28, 2023, alleging that its delayed implementation and linkage with delimitation raise serious concerns, especially during ongoing elections in several states. In a direct message to the Prime Minister, Banerjee urged him to address such matters in Parliament, emphasizing the need for accountability and scrutiny. She described his recent address as “misleading” and politically motivated. The remarks mark a fresh escalation in the ongoing political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP over key constitutional and electoral issues.
