Mexico Cruise into FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16
Co-hosts Mexico continued their outstanding FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over Ecuador, securing their place in the Round of 16 after another impressive performance under head coach Javier Aguirre.
Kick-off at Mexico City Stadium was delayed by an hour due to adverse weather, but Mexico wasted no time asserting themselves once play began. Gilberto Mora, Luis Romo and Raul Jimenez all threatened early before Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a powerful finish after racing onto Roberto Alvarado's perfectly timed through ball.
Quinones turned provider just after the half-hour mark, setting up Raul Jimenez, who calmly doubled Mexico's advantage to send the home crowd into celebration.
Mexico remained in complete control after the break, with defenders Cesar Montes and Johan Vasquez producing another composed display, while goalkeeper Raul Rangel extended his remarkable run to four consecutive clean sheets in the tournament.
Ecuador's frustrating evening ended on a sour note in stoppage time when Piero Hincapie was shown a red card following an exchange with Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez.
The victory sends Mexico into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between England and Congo DR on 5 July at Mexico City Stadium.
