National Sports Day celebrations were held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya leading the programme and encouraging citizens to make sports and physical activity a regular part of their lives.

The celebrations focused on promoting greater participation in sports and creating awareness about the importance of fitness, particularly among young people.

This year's programme placed special emphasis on the nationwide ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ initiative, which encourages citizens to spend at least one hour engaged in sports or physical activities.

‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ Initiative

A major highlight of the National Sports Day celebrations was the ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ initiative.

The campaign aims to motivate people across the country to step away from sedentary routines and spend dedicated time participating in sports and physical activities.

The initiative places particular emphasis on children and young people, encouraging them to develop an active lifestyle from an early age.

The message is simple: dedicating at least one hour every day to sports or physical activity can help promote fitness while also encouraging discipline, teamwork and an interest in sporting activities.

Mansukh Mandaviya Calls for Greater Participation in Sports

During the celebrations, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya called for greater participation in sports and fitness activities.

The Union Minister highlighted the importance of creating a culture where sports are not viewed only as a competitive pursuit but also as an important part of everyday life.

He encouraged citizens, especially young people, to make use of playgrounds and sports facilities and participate actively in physical activities.

The focus on wider participation reflects the broader objective of encouraging a healthier and more active society.

Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium Hosts Celebrations

The Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium served as the venue for the National Sports Day programme.

The stadium is named after legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, whose contribution to Indian hockey remains an important part of the country's sporting history.

National Sports Day is observed in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the country's most celebrated hockey players.

The occasion provides an opportunity to recognise India's sporting legacy while encouraging people to participate in sports and physical activity.

Focus on Youth and Fitness

The 2026 celebrations placed strong emphasis on young people and the importance of developing healthy and active habits.

The ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ campaign seeks to encourage children and youth to spend meaningful time on playgrounds and participate in sports.

Regular participation in physical activity can also help develop qualities such as teamwork, discipline, perseverance and sportsmanship.
