Penny Wong Calls India-Australia Ties Stronger Than Ever, PM Modi Visit Soon

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the growing strength of India-Australia relations, describing the partnership as one built on “strategic trust” and deepening economic cooperation while also confirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Australia.

Speaking during a media interaction following discussions linked to Quad engagements, Wong highlighted the close diplomatic engagement between the two nations and her strong working relationship with India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.

“My meeting with External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar, I'm told, is our 28th in-person meeting together,” Wong said, adding that the frequency of interactions reflects not only the importance of bilateral ties but also their personal friendship.

Calling India and Australia “comprehensive strategic partners,” Wong noted that both countries share strong strategic alignment amid evolving global and regional challenges. She also underscored India's growing economic significance, stating that India remains the world's fastest-growing major economy and an essential economic partner for Australia.

The Australian Foreign Minister stressed that as both countries work toward supply chain diversification and economic growth, bilateral ties are expected to deepen further.

Addressing broader regional issues, Wong said discussions during the Quad meeting focused on emerging geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

She further revealed that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Australia in the near future, expressing optimism over strengthening bilateral and regional cooperation.

Wong reiterated that India and Australia share a common vision of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific and are committed to working together for regional growth and security.
