Trump, who held three meetings with Kim during his first term, indicated that he maintains a positive relationship with the North Korean leader and expressed confidence that Kim would respond well to constructive US leadership.
“I get along with him very well... and he's going to be fine. As long as we have a smart president, he's going to be fine,” Trump said.
Trump also criticised previous US administrations for allowing North Korea to develop its nuclear arsenal, saying the country’s nuclear capabilities should never have been permitted to emerge.
A renewed Trump-Kim engagement could mark a significant return to the high-level diplomacy that characterised Trump’s first term. The two leaders previously held summits in Singapore and Hanoi, followed by a meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
Any fresh talks would likely focus on North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes, regional security and the broader US-North Korea relationship.
