Vozinha Heroics Help Cape Verde Secure Historic Draw Against Spain

FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced the tournament's biggest surprise so far by holding reigning European champions Spain to a frustrating 0-0 draw in their Group H opener on Monday.

Ranked 64th in the world, Cape Verde delivered a disciplined defensive masterclass to deny one of football's most talented attacking sides. Spain dominated possession with 74 percent of the ball and unleashed 23 shots throughout the contest, yet failed to break down the resilient Cape Verdian defense.

The star of the match was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who turned back wave after wave of Spanish attacks. The 40-year-old shot-stopper made several crucial saves, including three first-half denials of Ferran Torres, keeping Cape Verde level heading into halftime.

Spain's midfield trio of Pedri, Gavi, and Fabian Ruiz controlled proceedings and pinned Cape Verde deep inside their own half for long stretches. However, the tournament debutants remained organized and compact, frustrating the European champions at every opportunity.

Seeking a breakthrough, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente introduced Euro 2024 Golden Ball winner Lamine Yamal in the 70th minute, followed by Dani Olmo and Nico Williams. Despite the added firepower, Cape Verde's defense refused to buckle under pressure.

Cape Verde even threatened a fairy-tale victory late in the match when Diney Borges connected with a Telmo Arcanjo cross, forcing Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón into his only major save of the evening.

Spain pushed forward one final time from a late corner, but Mikel Oyarzabal's header sailed over the crossbar, sealing a historic point for Cape Verde in their first-ever FIFA World Cup match.

The result leaves Group H wide open and marks one of the most memorable performances in Cape Verdean football history, while Spain will be left searching for answers after failing to convert their dominance into goals.

Player of the Match:Vozinha (Cape Verde)

After the match Luis de la Fuente, Spain coach said," In our heads there’s positivity and a desire to improve. We should have won today’s match with everything that happened, with all the favourable situations we created, but we lacked freshness and clinical edge. We need to keep growing and gaining rhythm. That’s the big goal in the days we have until the next game. The opponent was a very physically strong team. We knew they were going to set up with a very low block and with very powerful players. If you add to that the fact that we lacked freshness, then this happens. Football is like that – there are no small opponents here."
