CM Announces Major Transport Push at Launch of 50 AC Buses

West Bengal Water Metro Service took centre stage as the State government unveiled 50 new air-conditioned buses and announced a series of ambitious transport infrastructure projects aimed at modernising public mobility. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said West Bengal is set to become the 17th State in India to introduce a Water Metro service.

The Chief Minister also revealed that a proposal has been sent to the Centre for the further expansion of the Kolkata Metro network. He claimed that the long-standing traffic congestion at Chingrighata had been significantly reduced within just 17 days through administrative measures.

Government Focuses on Modern Public Transport
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasised that strengthening public transport remains one of the government's top priorities. According to him, a reliable and modern transport network is essential for accelerating economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.
He stated that despite West Bengal carrying a debt burden of nearly ₹8 lakh crore, the government remains committed to introducing modern and environmentally friendly vehicles to improve public transport services.

The Chief Minister also announced that the State would induct more electric buses in the coming months as part of its clean mobility initiative.
Centre and State to Share Electric Bus Project Cost
Highlighting the financial structure of the electric bus programme, the Chief Minister said the project would be jointly funded by the Centre and the State government.

According to him, the Central government will bear 60% of the project cost, while the remaining 40% will be funded by the State government. The initiative is expected to accelerate the transition to greener public transport while reducing pollution and improving commuter convenience.

Zero-Value Bus Tickets for Women
In another significant announcement, the Chief Minister introduced a Zero-Value Ticket scheme for women travelling on government buses.

The initiative is intended to make public transport more affordable and accessible for women across the State. Officials believe the scheme will encourage greater use of public transport while easing the financial burden on regular commuters.
Major Push for Aviation Infrastructure
The Chief Minister also outlined plans to strengthen air connectivity across West Bengal.

He claimed that the Central government has agreed to provide financial assistance for the development of domestic airports at Balurghat, Malda and Purulia. In addition, a modern airport is proposed to be developed in Kalyani, further expanding the State's aviation infrastructure.

According to the Chief Minister, improved air connectivity will play a crucial role in attracting investments, boosting tourism and creating new employment opportunities.

Transport Development Linked to Industrial Growth
The Chief Minister asserted that better transport infrastructure would directly contribute to industrial development in West Bengal.

He said improved connectivity through roads, metro services, waterways and airports would make the State more attractive for investors while generating employment opportunities for young people.
He also criticised the previous government, alleging that administrative shortcomings had resulted in the loss of direct international air connectivity between West Bengal and destinations in Europe and the United States. The current administration, he said, is committed to inclusive development and better infrastructure.

Target of 1,000 New Buses by March
The State government has also significantly expanded its public transport targets.

Referring to an earlier announcement by Transport Minister Arjun Singh, who had stated that more than 450 new buses would be introduced before Durga Puja, the Chief Minister said the government has now increased its target.

He announced that 1,000 new buses are expected to be on West Bengal roads by March next year, aiming to reduce pressure on public transport and improve connectivity during the festive season and beyond.

West Bengal Water Metro Service marks a significant step in the State's effort to modernise its transport infrastructure. Along with the launch of 50 new AC buses, plans for electric buses, metro expansion, new airports and a larger public transport fleet reflect an ambitious vision for improving connectivity. If implemented successfully, these initiatives could strengthen urban mobility, support industrial growth and offer better travel options for millions of commuters across West Bengal.
